Stamping on canvas and coloring with sprays (tutorial)

Hello all!  Today I have a bit of a tutorial to share with you.  Recently I made a card where I stamped a solid image onto canvas, and it looked really cool.  Then just a few days ago I wanted to stamp on canvas again, this time with an outline stamp.  I thought it would be cool to try to color the image in with spray inks using a stamped "stencil".  I'm sure this is a no-brainer for some of you, but I had never tried it or seen it done, so I took step-by-step photos to share.  Here is the finished canvas piece:

This technique would also work with an image stamped on paper; for this tutorial, I will be working on canvas.  I started out with a piece of sticky-back canvas, specifically Ranger Sticky-Back Canvas ATC.  I stamped an image and a sentiment, both by Paper Smooches:

I stamped the same image onto a piece of scrap cardstock.  I used Memento Rich Cocoa ink for all stamping:

I then used a craft knife to cut the image out of the cardstock, creating my stencil.  Since I wanted to color the flower and the leaves two different colors, I also cut the leaves away from the flower:

I placed the stamped canvas onto my non-stick craft sheet, then laid my stencil over the canvas image.  I used some other scraps to cover the rest of the canvas, and taped all the cardstock pieces in place using Scotch tape:

I decided I wanted to color the leaves first, so I used the cardstock flower to cover the canvas flower.  I taped the cardstock flower to the stencil so that only the canvas leaves would be exposed:

I sprayed Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist Chalkboard Spray in the color Sprout:

I wiped off the excess spray, then removed the cardstock flower from the stencil.  Here you can see the whole canvas flower with only the leaves colored in:

Next I placed the cardstock leaves into the stencil and taped them in place:

I sprayed the flower using Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Vintage Pink:

I wiped off all the excess spray and removed the cardstock stencil from the canvas.  Here again is the finished result:

I used my canvas to create this paper yummy:

I used some Studio Calico Mister Huey ink in Classic Calico to add spatter to my background papers.  I had never done that before either (even though it's all the rage right now), but was inspired by the Spatter Technique Challenge in the Moxie Fab World.  And since Cath extended the deadline, why not play along?    I finished off the card with some machine stitching, this cute gingham ribbon, and a button:

Here's another view:

This was a really fun technique, and I encourage you to try it if you haven't before.  Even if you don't have any canvas on hand, try it on paper!  It's a cool alternative to coloring in an image with markers or pencils.  If you do try it, I'd love to see your result!  Thanks for looking!

It's never too late...

Happy Tuesday!  I hope everybody's week is going great so far.  Today I have a cute little card to share using the colors from this week's ColourQ Challenge, the sketch from Mojo Monday, and the Spectacular Spectacles Challenge in the Moxie Fab World.

I just love those colors together!  And I thought that square card sketch was really cute, and worked perfectly with my idea for the spectacles challenge.  And any excuse to use Paper Smooches stamps is a good one!  Now for the paper yummies:

I've been wanting to use these sunglasses from the Paper Smooches Get Outta Town set since I got it last month, and this was the perfect opportunity.  I created the background using Versamark ink, then stamped the sunglasses in red ink for the focal point (pun intended! LOL!).  I added some little rhinestones to the glasses and Glossy Accents to the lenses:
Have you played along with the Spectacular Spectacles challenge yet?  There are some seriously cute examples in the Moxie Fab World!  You've still got plenty of time too - just under 2 weeks left.

Here's where I'm playing:
Paper Players Challenge #93: Tic Tac Toe (I used the "blue, free space, ribbon" row)

Thanks for looking!

Paper Smooches April Guest Designer, week 1 (pic heavy)

Happy Wednesday, everybody! I'm SO EXCITED to be the guest designer for Paper Smooches Stamps this month! Paper Smooches is the first guest designer "gig" I've gotten (or put in for), so that makes it doubly exciting. The three April stamp releases are TOO CUTE (!) and even though the themes are much different, they work so well together. I made a total of eight cards (for the guest design spot - of course, I couldn't stop there though!), and Kim will be featuring 2 of them on the Paper Smooches blog every Wednesday of the month. The cards she chose for this week are featuring the Pretty Momma and Simply Said sets. Now for the paper yummies:
I just love how feminine the images on the Pretty Momma set are. I stamped the cameo onto this die cut frame, and added a strip of rhinestones for her necklace. And do you see that pink "paper" with the text printed on it, behind the cameo? That's product packaging! Yep, it's the backing from a package of trims. LOVE it! I machine stitched all the way around the frame with some natural quilting thread, and also stitched around the pink packaging and down the left side of the card:

In keeping with the vintage-y look, I used a strip of muslin instead of ribbon. I love the way it frays. I stamped the sentiment onto a rectangular die cut, and banner-cut the right side. I added this adorable rose brad and attached the sentiment to the bow. Here's another close-up:

Okay, on to the next card. Now, I'm not normally a butterfly kinda girl...although I don't really know why...? Anyway, when I saw this butterfly, I really loved it and couldn't wait to use it. I think partly because I'm a sucker for a scallop, and this butterfly has cute little scalloped edges on her wings. So I decided I wanted to make her as dainty as I possibly could, and paper-piece her onto white cardstock so those scallops would really pop. And yes, it was really fun to fussy cut those scallops and other little parts not one, two, or three, but FOUR times! Well...maybe not so fun...but TOTALLY worth it! I love the way they turned out! More paper yummies:

So, I stamped the butterfly a total of three times per color - once on the white cardstock and twice on each color of patterned paper. Once I paper-pieced each butterfly, I used a thin line of Tombow Mono multi-glue down the middle of each butterfly to attach it onto the stamped image below. Once they were all adhered, I machine-stitched across them. Then I raised each wing to give it more dimension and "flutter", and added some Stickles. Here's a close-up:

I finished off this card with some baker's twine and the cutest little buttons. I love how the tiny pink one fits right into the white, flower shaped button:

Simple Card Saturday - Just sitting here...

Happy Saturday and St. Patrick's Day to everybody! I definitely had the luck of the Irish bestowed upon me, as I just found out that I'M GOING TO BE PUBLISHED!!! Yay! This will be my first publication, and I'm over-the-top excited. I cannot wait until August when I finally get to see my work in a magazine. I'm SUPER stoked!
Okay, on to my card for Simple Card Saturday. This week I'm playing along with the challenge at CAS-ual Fridays:
CFC44: It's as Easy as 1-2-3 Create a Clean And Simple project using
1. A Pattern
2. An Image
3. A Sentiment

I'm also playing along with the Moxie Fab World Tuesday Trigger:
I was inspired by the lovely chairs and the neutral color palette with pops of color. For today's card, I wanted to paper-piece this cute chair stamp from the Hero Arts "Wishing You Were Here" set, which took care of both the pattern and the image components of the CAS-ual Fridays challenge. And of course this sentiment included in that stamp set was just perfect. Now for the paper yummies:

I wanted the "wall" behind the chair to look as if it had paneling or beadboard on it, so I used my Scor-Pal to create some vertical lines on the white cardstock:

I wanted my ribbon to go behind the chair but not cover up the legs, so I cut a slit in the paper on each side of the chair stamp and wove the ribbon through to the back, then out to the front again, and tied it in a bow. I finished the card off with some machine stitching and stamped the sentiment onto the patterned "rug". Here's another close-up:

CPS Day 2 - aeio...missing u

Hi, everybody! I'm back with my card for day 2 of the Card Positioning Systems 5 year anniversary celebration. Here is the sketch (#166):
I thought it would be fun to use the large circular element in the sketch as a window in the front of my card, with the smaller circle affixed to a piece of patterned paper that would "bridge" the window. Not sure if that is the best way to describe it or of that even makes sense (LOL), but you'll see what I'm talking about. I used my Nestabilities circle dies to cut the window and the sentiment piece, and I think it turned out really cute! Now for the paper yummies:

I used patterned paper by October Afternoon, and machine stitched with red thread around the edges. Here is a close-up of the window, showing how you can see through to the inside of the card. The sentiment and the heart are Hero Arts stamps from the Year Round Sentiments set. I stamped the heart on patterned paper, trimmed around it, adhered it under my sentiment, and applied Glossy Accents on top of it. SO CUTE!
I am also playing along with the Die Cutting Challenge in the Moxie Fab World and the Lily Pad Cards Patterned Paper challenge presented by Simon Says Stamp.

Thanks for looking!

hello sunshine

I recently bought my first set of Paper Smooches stamps, and just cannot get enough of their cute little images and adorable sentiments. I also just discovered a few days ago that they offer free digital stamps on their blog, which is so cool! So I downloaded a few (all of them!), and used a couple of them to play along with their current challenge, inspired by this picture:

I just love the stripes and all the texture in those cute flowers and leaves, and I love the "fresh" color palette. I wanted to incorporate stripes in a little different way, bring the fresh spring colors into my card, and add some texture. I also used the following sketch from Young Crafters Unite:

I just LOVE the way this card turned out so bright and cheery. I added texture by stitching the sun's polka-dot rays (which are my stripes). I incorporated the teal/mint colors from the inspiration photo in the form of buttons and by outlining the sentiment banner. And now for the paper yummies:
It's a bit difficult to see in the photos, but I die-cut only the circular part of the sun using a Nestabilities die, so that I could "pop" him up a bit using dimensional adhesive:
